Hunan Province is located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, with the Dongting Lake situated on the north. It’s a birthplace of Mao Zedong, a great man of a generation. The Xiang River runs from south to north, and lastly enters the Dongting Lake, so Hunan boasts an abbreviated name of “Xiang”. By the reason of Xiaoxiang, Zengxiang and Yuanxiang, referring to areas of the above, middle and lower reaches of the Xiang River respectively, thus Hunan land is called “land of three Xiang’s”, Hunan dishes are called “land Dishes”, the most popular local opera is called “Xiang Opera”, Hunan’s culture is called “Hu Xiang Culture” or “Xiang Chu Culture”. Because many lotuses are planted there, the province is also known as the “Lotus Kingdom”. Mao Zedong wrote a famous sentence of “all brilliance in Lotus Kingdom”.
