As
we were walking down the street towards the city centre looking for a interview
partner we saw the MAPLIN SHOP on our right and decided to choose this store.
After entering we saw a technical sales man, who reminded us of Brad Pitt, standing
in the back of the shop and we decided he had to be our victim...
We
started talking to him and he was pleased and wanted to help us. His name is
Baligh and between selling electric stuff and advertising to customers he
answered our questions.
Decision to do this job & training before being able to start
He
likes selling electric things and enjoys seeing nice girls. (He smiled at this
point). If you like to work as a technical sales man you should bring some
experience with you, he told us. Then you work in the shop and you have to read
a kind of training book which will be your help if you have any questions. In
the following test he had to show what he had learned. It contains important
information about healthy and safety.
Before he started his work at MAPLIN, he used to
be a musician. But he didn’t earn enough money playing the keyboard.
Working hours & end of his MAPLAN career
For
nine months he has been working for MAPLAN, but next week he’s going to change.
He is going to sell mobile phones for a big company.
Normally
he works from
Travel & Holiday
Every
morning he walks about half an hour. In the evening the same way back-he never
takes the bus or a bike.
Every
year he has 28 days holiday, plus 4-5 days bank holiday, which are celebrated
national days.
All about the money
As
a technical sales man you earn about
£
12’000.00 a year, which is not that much, but you get a bonus for the sellras
products, so plus more or less £ 3’500.00 a year. Every third month you might
get a bonus if you and your team sell more products than expected.
The routine, likes & dislikes
On
a normal day he first signs in and afterwards he starts selling, nothing
special.
He
likes working in a team, especially with his actual workmates and Baligh loves
being with electronic stuff. The best thing that could happen is the sale of a
very expensive product like a navigator or a high-tech television.
On a bad day there
are impatient or impolite customers or a big delivery arrives, and in the worst
case it is summer and very hot at the same time.
His workmates
Baligh
and his workmates have become friends, but they don’t do a lot after work
because most of them got girlfriends and so they usually don’t have the time to.
Conclusion
After
all we have learned being a technical sales man we confess that this is
definitely not a job for us. We don’t like technical stuff, neither working as
a salesperson. But if you are interested in these things, and if you enjoy
working in a team, then it seems to be an interesting job, even it is not
particulary well paid.
