The Kurser

Where did we find “The Kurser”?

We live in the little village of Cherry Hinton, which is about 30 minutes away from school. There are some little shops where we can do our shopping. One of those was “The Kurser”. We stood in front of it and saw some bikes for children. We were immediately fallen in love with them. After that the owner of the come came outside and asked if he could help us. He was very sympathise and so we decide to do our interview with him.

What was the atmosphere like?

The atmosphere was very relaxing and the two owners of the shop just joked with us. That made it easy for us to speak with them. While we have been speaking with one, the other man who was repairing a bike kept on makting some comments. For example when we asked about his break times the man in the background just said he is having breaks through the whole day.

The Spirit - coming January 2006

About our interview partner

He has a very nice and pleasant appearance and he is very open-minded. A skill which is very necessary for a seller. He told us a lot of interesting things about his life as a shopkeeper.

His name is Antonio Sabnani and he is 42 years old. He worked as a car and bus mechanical until July. Then he and his friend decided to open their own bike store. In addition, Antonio has also a car store in the city. He really likes to be independent. What he dislikes about his job are the whining customers and interviewers like us :-)

In the bike store they work from 9 a.m. till 5.30 p.m., during these hours they repair and sell bikes. When we asked him about the salary he asked us if we would like to work for him he could offer us a salary of £ 15’000 pounds a year as assistants.

What does the shop looks like?

The Foxy - coming January 2006It is a small shop and it has a very delicious looking. When you enter shop there are a lot of bikes on the left and on the right side. At the back of the shop is a desk with bike equipment in the background. Hidden behind the left side of the desk is a little workshop where they repair the bikes.

They sell different kinds of bikes. For example, electric bikes (see in the picture) and petrol bikes. They also sell bike equipment.

Conclusion

We were really pleased to do this interview. It was very funny and we joked with the owners. We noticed that you have to be very ambitious if you want to have your own store. Furthermore you have to make a lot of compromises. For example they only have about two weeks holiday a year.

We prefer just being an employee and don’t want the responsibility that a self-employee has to have.
